ARTIST STATEMENT Referencing philosophy, scientific theories as well as traditional cosmogonies, my artistic practice questions belief systems that define our conception of the natural world. Of particular significance is the way in which abstract concepts take tangible forms, such as maps and time-measuring devices; forms that reflect our psychological, cultural and historical understanding of the world. In my process, I freely adopt scientific research methods and references such as the collection of proof-like material, the examination of archives, the use of databases, and the observation of natural phenomena. I build installations using photographs combined with objects, drawings, archive material, and small sculptures. The fragmented layering and synthesis of these diverse forms, images, combined with shifts in perspective, disrupt a unified reading. This prompts viewers to produce new meanings by contemplating the problematic manner in which the world is experienced and understood.	DÉMARCHE ARTISTIQUE Faisant référence à la philosophie, à la science et aux cosmogonies traditionnelles, ma pratique artistique interroge les systèmes de croyances qui définissent notre conception du monde naturel. Un intérêt particulier est dirigé dans la manière dont les concepts abstraits prennent des formes tangibles comme les cartes géographiques et les instruments de mesure ; formes dont les mécanismes et l’esthétique reflètent notre compréhension du monde. Dans mon processus, j’adopte librement des méthodes scientifiques comme la collection de preuves, la recherche d’archive, l’utilisation de banques de données, et l’observation de phénomènes naturels. Je construis des installations où la photographie est combinée à des objets, des dessins, des documents d’archive, et des sculptures. La synthèse de ces formes fragmentées, superposées, empêche une lecture linéaire des œuvres, multipliant les façons dont on peut en faire l’expérience. Mon travail invite ainsi le spectateur à contempler la manière complexe — et souvent problématique — dont le monde est vécu, ressenti, et compris.
BIOGRAPHY Josée Pedneault is a visual artist living and working in Montreal. Her work has been shown in national and international venues, such as Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2018), CONTACT Gallery (Toronto, 2015), TYPOLOGY (Toronto, 2015), Museo del Chopo (Mexico City, 2014) and Darling Foundry (Montréal 2012). Since the beginning of her career, artist residencies have shaped her art practice and thinking process. She has completed several residencies at Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2018), Street Level Photoworks (Glasgow, 2017), Tokyo Wonder Site (Japan, CALQ, 2016), Beta-Local (Puerto Rico, 2015), SIM (Island, 2011), the Quebec studio in Mexico (Mexico, CALQ, 2009), the Cité des arts à Paris (France, CALQ, 2008), and at CCA Ujazdowski Castle (Warsaw, Poland, 2006). She also creates public art projects for private and public institutions. Josée Pedneault holds an MFA in studio art from Concordia University and is a co-founder of artist-run-centre Les Territoires. She is a part-time teacher in the department of photography at Concordia University. Her book-project Glazial-Kosmogonie will be released in September 2020. A co-publishing between Künstlerhaus Bethanien and Revolver Publishing, Berlin.	BIOGRAPHY Josée Pedneault est une artiste en arts visuels vivant et travaillant à Montréal. Son travail a fait l’objet d’expositions nationales et internationales telles qu’au Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2018), CONTACT Gallery (Toronto, 2015-16), TYPOLOGY (Toronto, 2015), Museo del Chopo (Mexique, 2014), la Fonderie Darling (Montréal, 2012). Depuis le début de sa carrière, la participation à plusieurs résidences d’artiste a marqué le développement de sa pratique artistique et des thèmes explorés. Elle a réalisé des résidences à Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2018), Street Level Photoworks (Glasgow, 2017), Tokyo Wonder Site (Japon, CALQ, 2016), à Beta-Local (Puerto Rico, 2015), à SIM (Islande, 2011), le studio du Québec à Mexico (Mexique, CALQ, 2009), la Cité des arts à Paris (France, CALQ, 2008) et au CCA Ujazdowski Castle (Varsovie, Pologne, 2006). En plus de ses projets d’exposition, Josée Pedneault réalise des projets d’art public pour des institutions publiques et privées. Josée Pedneault détient une maitrise en arts visuels de l’Université Concordia et est cofondatrice du centre d’artiste Les Territoires. Elle est professeure à temps partiel dans le programme de photographie à l’Université Concordia. Son livre-projet Glazial-Kosmogonie sortira en septembre 2020, une co-publication entre Künstlerhaus Bethanien et Revolver Publishing, Berlin.
